Abstract:

Introduction: Diabetes is a chronic disease that is associated with a wide range of liver disorders. The levels of liver enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) are altered in liver injury. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the concurrent effect of aerobic exercise and stevia extract supplementation on the levels of some liver function indices in diabetic rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 40 males wistar rats weighing 150-220 g were used. Animals were randomly divided into five groups; healthy control (non-diabetic) , diabetic control, diabetic + aerobic exercise, diabetic + stevia and diabetic + aerobic exercise + stevia. The extract was administered by gavage during 6 weeks. The aerobic exercise program was performed 5 days a week for a period of six weeks. At the end of the intervention, blood samples were collected to measure the levels of liver enzymes from the heart. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukeychr('39')s Post Hoc Test. Results: the levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase decreased significantly in all experimental groups compared to diabetic control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Aerobic exercise and stevia extract in diabetic rats have a protective effect on the liver against damage caused by STZ, but if aerobic exercise and consumption of stevia extract are combined, these two effects are increased and liver function is improved.
